Project Center: South Philippines Medical Centre (SPMC), Davao City, Mindanao
Twinning Partner: National University Hospital (NUH), Singapore; St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, USA
Project Leader: Dr. Mae Dolendo, SPMC
Start Date: May 2009
Project Background: Over 1,100 cases of childhood cancer are expected in the Mindanao region annually, but only around 250 are diagnosed at the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) and our four satellite centers. The SPMC has 25 dedicated pediatric oncology beds and treats predominantly leukemias, solid tumors, and retinoblastoma, of which there was a survival rate of 20% in 2008. Currently, the one-year survival rate is almost 60% for the most easily treatable cancers. A 5th satellite center has been opened in Butan City to help more children.
